Our dog passed away a few months ago. Never in the four years of her time with us did she (or could she-corgi) get into the trash except once and it was epic: Her story hails from a night of my husband drinking homemade red wine and eating chili. He got a little too into the menu and spent most of his later evening puking into a Wal-Mart bag, half hanging out of that dog’s bed (with her in it). The bag ended up in the small bathroom trash can at the foot off our bed. We called it a night and all went to bed. The next morning, we’re out in the living room being lazy and the dog wandered off. She was my shadow 99.9% of the time, so I went looking for her. Got half way down the hall and the smell smacked me in the face. I turned into our bedroom to see Loo’s artwork on my white carpet. She had torn the puke bag open and motorboated the shit out of it. I screamed a smorgasbord of expletives and my hung over husband came running. He spent the next thirty minutes cleaning my floor while I cared for a very sick (and drunk) little dog.

My newborn is 2 months old today. My first two weeks as a new mom was ruined due to pressure from lactation consultants. They all had different opinions and methods. My daughter had a latching problem and she starved the first two days of her life. After two weeks of no sleep, anxiety, Zoloft and pain, I finally broke down on a Saturday morning at 3:00am. I felt horrible for not being able to provide for my daughter, but I had to be healthy to be a good mom. She has been on formula ever since. She is thriving, strong, adorable and amazing. If I could have continued to breastfeed, I would have. I got mastitis, went on antibiotics, got more infections and was in a lot of pain. I had an amazing support group of family and friends who never questioned our choice and wanted to see me healthy. Every child is different. Every mother is different. You have to do what is best for your child and yourself.
