1. American Horror Story and Mad Men lead the pack

Both received 17 nominations, the most for any program this year. Notable nominations for AHS include best miniseries as well as acting noms for Connie Britton and Jessica Lange. Meanwhile, Mad Men dominated the usual drama categories with additional acting noms for Ben Feldman, Jared Harris and Christina Hendricks.

2. Kristen Wiig is a double-nominee

The Saturday Night Live alum picked up nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Comedy Series for SNL as well as Outstanding Voice-Over Performance for her work on The Looney Tunes.

3. Jon Hamm acts his way into both comedy and drama categories

For a third time, Jon Hamm snabbed two acting nominations for Mad Men and his recurring role on 30 Rock making him one of the few actors nominated in the same year for acting in both drama and comedy.

4. Family Guy is nowhere to be found

The animated series went after Outstanding Comedy Series this year and was forced to remove itself from the Animation categories altogether. Unfortunately for the program, it was up against stiff competition and their controversial Emmy campaign may have hurt their chances.

5. All the adults from Modern Family are nominated

Julie Bowen, Ty Burrell, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Eric Stonestreet, Ed O’Neill and Sofia Vergara earned nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actor(ess) in a Comedy Series leaving litte room for other shows to compete. Unfortunately, the kids were shut out.

6. Kathryn Joosten picks up a posthumous nomination

The actress who passed away at the age of 72 in June was recognized for her work on the final season of Desperate Housewives. She will go head-to-head with the ladies of Modern Family in the category, Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.

7. Entourage gets burned

Once a fixture in the Outstanding Comedy Series category, the final season limped away with a single nomination for Outstanding Sound Mixing For A Comedy or Drama Series (Half-Hour) And Animation. Ouch!

8. Glee is no longer Emmy’s darling

That was fast! The show failed to pick up usual nominations for Lea Michele and Chris Colfer in addition to a place in the Outstanding Comedy Series category. Dot-Marie Jones (Coach Beiste) was the only one to muster up a acting nom for Outstanding Guest Actress - one that was well-earned.

9. Lena Dunham is a triple threat

The Girls star (right) picked up nominations for acting, directing, and writing for the HBO hit. All the haters move to the left.

10. American Idol Is Out

For the first time since the category’s inception in 2003, AI was not nominated for Outstanding Reality Competition Program. The final nail in the coffin?

11. Hollywood stars storm the Emmys

Kevin Costner, Nicole Kidman, Julianne Moore and Clive Owen all picked up their first Emmy nominations this year for acting in a miniseries or TV movie.

12. Betty White’s still got it

The actress who stormed back onto the scene following a supporting role in The Proposal and appearances on SNL as well as Hot In Cleveland continued her streak with a nom for Outstanding Host For A Reality or Reality Competition Program. She earned it for her hosting duties on the NBC show, Betty White’s Off Their Rockers.
