Lots of Republicans, a new war between South and North (Carolinas), and battle of robed dignitaries.

1. How crowded is the race to the top of the education department?

You can count them on two hands now, if that's allowed in school. Take four candidates, minus one, and add three to equal the number of Republicans now running in the increasingly crowded primary for S.C. Superintendent of Schools.

There are at least six GOP candidates, and two Democratic candidates. But with rumors of at least another Republican eyeing the seat, at this stage we can safely say who isn't running for the position: former candidate Rep. Andy Patrick and current seat holder Mick Zais.

2. SC top judge keeps her seat, but challenger issues promise

Lawmakers decided the state's top judge Jean Toal will remain in the seat until she retires at 72 years old, as mandated by S.C. law. Her challenger, Costa Pleicones, told South Carolina Radio Network that he will seek the chief justice spot then.

3. Transportation Secretary: “Today’s the day that my job ends”

The dashcam video was released this week showing S.C. Transportation Secretary Robert St. Onge Jr. being tested and arrested. He blew a 0.2, according to reports, and he resigned immediately.

Charges include driving under the influence. There is an unofficial charge of irony.

4. Drawing the line between the states

South Carolina is moving closer to solving its decades old border enforcement problems.

This fix does not involve ICE, Lindsey Graham or Trey Gowdy. New laws are being carefully drafted to redraw the divide between the Carolinas.

Surveyors originally marked the lines using rocks and trees. Now, a team from both states is relying on instructions dating from the 1730s to recreate the map.

It’s a big deal to property owners from Rock Hill and the Upstate.

This legislation will not settle, however, which state’s flagship university should truly be called “Carolina.” That would result in an all-out civil war.
