This story makes me very sad indeed. Although the crime that Cameron Spurback committed was, indeed, heinous, it is no more heinous than the lack of sensitivity that the media had in response to his physical “deformities.” I can only imagine the amount of pain and suffering that Mr. Spurback has had to endure at the hands of people who would, indeed, publicly classify his appearance as “terrifying.” It seems to not be so much the act of the molestation that draws media attention to this case as it is the circus-like appeal of hearing about and seeing the pictures of a “freak” who went to jail. It is not a long shot to assume that Spurback probably has very deeply engrained psychological issues from the negative reactions to his appearance. So I think that it is valid to ask ourselves: who really is to blame for the crime that Spurback commited? Without devaluing the evil that is child molestation and the responsibility one has for ones own actions, I think that our society and the lack of empathy and compassion within it is also accountable for this monstrosity. Love and kindness begets love and kindness, and the same is true for cruelty and evil. Please, think about this before you allow yourself to write off Spurback as just some pedophilic eyesore. He is a product of his environment, and deserves at least a remnant of your compassion and a shred of basic human dignity.
