When I go to a bar, I tip $1 for drinks that cost around $5, and $0.50 for drinks that cost under $3.  Restaurants: If the bill is $10-$15, I tip $3. If it's $20-$30, I tip $5-$8. If I just won money or got paid a lot, I'll tip $10. If the server acts like a dick (I was a waiter for a while, I know how it is, but you have to be cool to people to get tips) I'll tip less. I don't do percentages. Fuck that noise.

I think tipping is great but I hate that it's become an expected practice. You should tip if someone goes out of their way to help you or does an especially great job but what's with the 20% for a manicurist?

$1 for a limo driver? Try 20%.
And don't forget valet parkers or they'll fuck your shit up. Hit 'em going in and out, because there may be different drivers.

What's with you Americans and tipping every single person you meet? If a waiter does a particularly good job I could justify a small tip, but bus drivers, movers and paper boys? get real

Pardon me, but fuck 'always.' There is no such thing as always in the world of tipping. Tips are a big deal to me. If you do a crapass job, you don't get anything.

Or maybe their employer could, uh, actually pay them well enough. I worked as a server though college and I always hated that I busted my ass and then had to tip out to hostesses and everybody else when they made more per hour.

Best thing about living in Japan was not having to tip. When I moved back to America I was like wtf man this sux…boo.

I've never done a percentage for drinks. A buck per.

I see tip jars everywhere now and I'm not sure if I should tip at these places, and how much. What do I tip at the coffee shop? Do I have to tip the guy who made my burrito? Does the guy who scoops ice cream deserve a tip too?

I really don't get the US tipping culture. I'll tip a couple of quid in a restaurant if I feel the service has been great but I'm not gonna give some cash to someone who has served me raw foetus and called me a cunt while doing it just because 'it's the done thing'.
