This was on Buzzfeed awhile back, and it’s as boring as before. This whole set of pictures is supposed to be ironic and satirical. Please don’t get upset over something when you’re completely missing the point.

Here’s my objection to this, and the sexualization of youth, generally. When a grown woman dresses sexy, she understands why she is dressed like that. She understands the subtext, and the way it makes other people feel. These girls don’t. They were probably prodded into the right position by the photographers. An adult model would understand what the photographer means by “act seductive,” but these girls don’t. They probably had to be painstakingly shaped into the right position. That’s gross.

“It puts the lotion on the skin or else it gets the hose again!” Don’t know why this makes me think of that….

Get real people, Little girls play dress up all the time. Just because these girls are put in grown up clothing does not mean that it is sexual.

Okay, lemme try to ‘splain it to you, for those who don’t get why this is sick:
1. Posing in adult women’s fashion and pretending to lounge around like bored socialites is not an appropriate activity for — or image of — girlhood. These girls should be out playing with their friends, exploring, learning, getting strong - not doing this.
2. Many of these images have blatantly sexual overtones, and it’s not appropriate to portray children as sexual. (Newsflash: a toothbrush in the mouth, a finger on the lips, a red ring on a friend’s hand over your chest — if you can’t see what these images suggest, then you don’t get the language of advertising.)
3. These images reveal the ridiculous but inevitable conclusion of what we’re supposed to be striving for: bodies so thin, and skin so perfect, that they can only be attained by pre-pubescent children.
4. As a society, we should present children with the best life we can offer them, and encourage them to strive in rewarding and meaningful pursuits. Foisting an early obsession with high fashion, makeup and sexual poses —- essentially a kind of porn for women — isn’t it. I hope it isn’t it.
5. Imagine 8-year-old boys in these poses — laid out on beds, draped with jewels and fine fabric, making come-hither looks at the camera. It would be obscene. So is this.

This is so sick on so many levels.

This really highlights how the fashion industry embraces a girlish form, rather than a womanly form. Most of today’s models are young teenagers.

Girls love to play dress-up and just like most good art, these pictures force us to ask (uncomfortable?) questions about ourselves. If you don’t like the answer than the problem is with you, not them or the artist.
