Residents of the central city of Chelyabinsk saw a meteor blaze across the sky.
It exploded and sent fireballs shooting to Earth.
Roscosmos, Russia's space agency, said the meteorite was travelling 30 km (19 miles) per second.
The meteorite explosion caused a sonic boom, according to the Interior Ministry. This shattered windows and damaged buildings.
The meteorite's vapour trail could be seen some 200km away in Yekaterinburg.
