Is this data old? This image shows a nat'l average of 8.5% in Sep '09, but unemployment actually rose past 9% in April, and then passed 10% last month.
I'd like to see the same thing with average income, perhaps normalized by regional cost of living. The coastline areas are probably still doing much better.
