Stevia

A new zero-calorie sweetener than will soon be coming to Coke products near you. It's an “all natural” alternative to sugar made from a sweet herb, which I assume tastes as awful as it sounds

  • GNC's NuNaturals NuStevia tastes really good. Doesn't leave an aftertaste. Made brown rice pudding with it and it was great.

  • Stevia really is natural. You can literally buy chopped up or powdered leaves of the plant and add it to your food as is. Of course, more often it is processed somewhat to remove the grassy taste and leave only the sugary taste, and then it comes in a liquid or something. Point is, this is not the new aspartame, it's a plant product. After it is refined (just like sugar is refined) it is 300 times sweeter and without the unhealthy effects of eating cane. It is not exactly the same taste, and some people don't like it. But it's definitely not synthetic or fake.

  • What has a corn syrup ad got to do with stevia?
Some people like stevia and some don't. A huge factor is the type of extract you are using. But just saying that stevia tastes bad is like saying you don't like ketchup and so tomatoes taste bad.
These stevia extracts that are being promoted by mega-corporations are not really natural, but they are derived from nature. One or two of the sweet compounds are isolated from the plant and from the bitter aftertaste that is a hallmark of the leaf and crude extracts.

  • I saw a commercial for a prodcut made with this called “truvia.” It reminded me of those pro-high fructose corn syrup ads. When are people going to learn… if it is all natural, it wouldn't need to be labeled so?
