I am thirteen years old. I find apostrophes easy and have never had any trouble using them in the correct places. You are clearly wrong, as everyone who has replied to this post is adamant that apostrophes are essential. 'We'll' becomes 'well', 'he'll' becomes 'hell' and 'I went to Chris' house' becomes 'I went to Chris house'. This is stupid. I don't know why I'm even wasting my time replying to it; apostrophes are obviously needed and anyone who thinks otherwise is incompetant. Thank you.. :) :$

What's so hard about them? This sounds like someone who misspells a word complaining about how the word is spelled, and not their inability to spell it.

apostrophes have tons of uses and we DO need them, and it is not the punctuation mark's (see!) fault that people are too dumb to use 'em correctly!!

Have you any friends named Chris? Good luck writing about anything of theirs… “I went to Chris' house” becomes “I went to Chris house.” And please please don't say that this will just be an exception. English already has too many of those.

Close, Jack! I think one rule is that the example sentence cant be a fragment in one or more of its forms. I like Veronica's example though. Maybe just get rid of apostrophes for possessives? That seems totally reasonable.

It's easy to pin something like this on “the evolution of language,” but the fact is that, in this case, it's simple laziness. SMS was born in text messages, and that's where it should stay. The real problem is that most of the people who are punctuationally challenged also can't spell for shit. As a result, it can be very difficult to decipher the meaning behind what has been written.
