"Friday" One-Year Anniversary

It's been a year today since Rebecca Black's “Friday” was first uploaded to the internet. Have you had your bowl of cereal yet today?

On Thursay February 10, 2011, some unknown worker bee at Ark Music Factory first uploaded the video for "Friday," a for-pay song written and produced by Ark Music factory for a Californian teenager named Rebecca Black. It got about a dozen views that first day.

A few months before, Black's mom had signed a contract with Ark, buying one song and one music video for her daughter for $4,000. The song was finished in late December; in January, Ark shot the exteriors for the video at her dad's house, with her actual friends kickin' in the front seat, sittin' in the back seat. As she told the O.C. Register, she had to shoot the "7 a.m., waking up in the morning" line probably "30 times."

The video skulked around YouTube quietly, finishing out February with just over 1,000 views.

And there it maybe would have stayed, if it weren't for Shawn.

">The Daily What on March 11th</a>, with a comment to the effect of "makes Justin Bieber sound like Shakespeare." No one knows who Shawn is. Neetzan Zimmerman, editor of The Daily What and a guy who reads most of the internet each day, realized he&#39;d struck internet gold:

<blockquote>I listened to it and immediately realized this was no ordinary horrible song. This was the MOST horrible song. I didn&#39;t think it needed much of a caption, so I went with something straightforward. I figured the horribleness would sing for itself. When something is this horrible, people take notice.</blockquote>

His post was quickly picked up by the <a href="http://tosh.comedycentral.com/blog/2011/03/11/songwriting-isnt-for-everyone/

I don&#39;t know you that well, but I&#39;m willing to guess it was something like confusion followed by the shocking realization you&#39;d never heard something quite so awful followed by a thin layer of actual, you know, enjoyment, followed almost immediately with the strong need to tell other people about what you were seeing, an urge to witness, yell, tweet, email, add to Facebook, IM or publish a link on your website, however it is you express your feelings.

    <media:rating scheme="urn:simple">nonadult</media:rating>

The specialness of "Friday" is hard to pin down. Matthew Perpetua, writing for Rolling Stone, <a href="http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/why-rebecca-blacks-much-mocked-viral-hit-friday-is-actually-good-20110315">said</a>:

<blockquote>But there&#39;s something else going on here, something that makes "Friday" uniquely compelling. After all, there&#39;s no shortage of insipid failed pop music out there, and Ark Music Factory is responsible for many other music videos by young unknowns that are just as cringe-inducing, if not much worse. When you see this video, you immediately notice everything that it does "wrong," but it actually gets a lot of things about pop music right, if just by accident.</blockquote>

That it was an accident seems obvious -- it&#39;s not like Ark has been able to repeat the success of "Friday," though it has put out quite a collection of tries. For the most part, they&#39;re like <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9UCdcW0RgII&amp;feature=channel_video_title">Lexi St. George&#39;s "Dancing To The Rhythm"</a> -- which is just sort of fine. She&#39;s a little too talented, too polished, to be special, and the song&#39;s too generic to be memorable. (St. George is actually the next closest thing to Black Ark has ever launched: She participated in some "making of the next viral star" thing on Good Morning America, and her song was used in an ad for headphones.) But "Dancing To The Rhythm," and Ark&#39;s other attempts, are all, weirdly, too good. The production&#39;s a tad too seamless, and there&#39;s no magical lyrical stupidity that quite touches the finer moments of "Friday":

<blockquote>Fun, fun, think about fun

You know what it is</blockquote>

But then "Friday" isn&#39;t just straight up awful. YouTube&#39;s channels are full of really, truly supbar music videos that fail to get much love.

To be truly bad, it must almost, kinda, nearly be good. But also awful. Behold, the Uncanny Valley of Songs...

"Friday" started going viral on a Thursday. The next day, the T&#x14D;hoku Earthquake struck Japan. "Friday" got 1.3 million views that day. There&#39;s probably no relationship between the two, but if there were, maybe it&#39;d be something along the lines of the fact that the news of the quake squeezed everything else out of the news cycle, and we all needed something to distract us, and something specific to be angry at. For all of the pondering over lyrics and production values, about high culture mixing with low, I think the thing that made "Friday" popular was kind of dark and sad: We wanted see someone seemingly that vapid and that un-self aware, and we wanted to hate them for just a little bit.

<blockquote>It&rsquo;s Friday, Friday

Why We&#39;re Supporting SOUP Day

January 18th is National Soup Day . Today, all across the country, people are coming together to support soup — an important lunchtime option we should all have access to.

Via: Shutterstock

We don't often take time to think about soup -- or as they say in Spanish, sopa -- in our busy, Internet-obsessed lives, but we should. It there any food so widely loved and eaten, so simple or so -- dare we say it -- inherently democratic?

As we pause to reflect on the impact soup has had on all our lives -- it goes really well with sandwiches, for instance -- it's also worth remembering the small, personal ways soup has touched us. The time you were sick and your mom made you chicken noodle soup. A cold winter's day with a hot mug of tomato soup. That time just after college where you lived on soup for 6 months because you couldn't find work. The date who never called after you took her to Hale N' Hearty.

Via: Shutterstock

In these ways and myriad others, soup touches us. As soup-maker Baxter reminds us:

Soup may be trendy now, but it's been with us since before the Iron Age -- and has played the part of a basic meal itself served from a cauldron, through to a 'prim and proper' starter to a meal and even a 'snack in a mug.'

Today is National Soup Day, the first celebration of one of the world's most versatile foods. Soup's eaten by 90% of the population, with more than half of us eating it at least once a week and 8% once a day or more! And it appears that the older we get, the more soup we are likely to eat.

Soup's been there for you all your life, quietly waiting to lend you its watery support at a moments notice. Shouldn't you be there for soup?

And it appears that the older we get, the more soup we are likely to eat.</blockquote>

Soup&#39;s been there for you all your life, quietly waiting to lend you its watery support at a moments notice. Shouldn&#39;t you be there for soup?

Turkey Responds To Perry

The Turkish government has released a statement reacting to Rick Perry's assertion at last night's Republican debate that Turkey “is being ruled by what many would perceive to be Islamic terrorists.”

Namik Tan, Turkey’s Ambassador to the United States, issued this statement in response to comments about Turkey during the January 16 Republican presidential candidates’ debate in South Carolina:

“I am disappointed and concerned that Turkey and its time-tested ties of alliance, partnership and friendship with the United States became the object of misplaced and ill-advised criticism during last night’s Republican candidates’ debate. Needless to say, the Turkey described in the debate simply does not exist.

“Turkey is a secular democracy that has for decades been an essential and trusted partner of the U.S. Our bilateral relations are based on the common values of democracy and respect for human rights, rule of law, and free market economy. Whether in the fight against terrorism or violent extremism, in Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria or against the proliferation of WMD, we stand side by side to tackle the many common threats and challenges of our times. Through NATO and bilaterally, Turkey and the U.S. will continue to cooperate day in day out to establish peace, security and prosperity around the world. Contrary to statements during the debate, Turkey receives no significant sums of foreign aid dollars from the U.S. Indeed, Turkey is a strong and growing trading partner with the U.S. in general, and with Texas in particular creating thousands of jobs throughout that state.

“Turkey is obviously not the same country that Governor Perry visited in the 1970s. As an accession country to the European Union and a founding member of the Council of Europe, Turkey has been continuously reviewing and enhancing the rights of all its citizens irrespective of their ethnic or religious background. Moreover, Turkey is now the 16th largest economy in the world, and the 6th biggest economy in Europe enjoying one of the most robust growth rates in its region and beyond. Its democratic standards, its economic strength, and its secular nature make Turkey an inspiration at a time when the Middle East and North Africa are undergoing a major transformation.

“While it was unfortunate, we do hope this episode in last night’s debate leads to a better informed foreign policy discussion among the Republican Party candidates, one where long-standing allies are treated with respect not disdain.”

When Brian Williams Emails Gawker

BW likes Gawker! BW doesn't like Lana Del Ray. A PR flack for NBC wrote Gawker to take the email down, but why? Once again, Brian Williams comes off as unreasonably cool.

A big congratulations to the new freelance weekend guy, Taylor Bernam. He's done some good posts right out of the box. I do wish the main page featured more TV coverage (Brooklyn hippster [sic] Lana Del Rey had one of the worst outings in SNL history last night — booked on the strength of her TWO SONG web EP, the least-experienced musical guest in the show's history, for starters). In my humble opinion as a loyal customer (you know I love you but the Blog View button will be the eventual cause of my death) and while I know you're in the midst of an editor change, weekends have been allowed to go awfully fallow — and it was a fallow holiday period for those of us who check your shit 10 times a day by iphone.
