    11 Classic Sitcom Cliches

Sitcom cliches are so close to my heart. I compiled this list mostly from memory but with a little help from TVTropes.org.

    1. Lost Pet

These episodes made me hug my pets and also made my blood pressure increase rapidly. Of course Modern Family, a champion of cliches, did this episode. Other shows include: Arthur, Rugrats, and the Brady Bunch.

    2. The Quiz Bowl

    3. Parents Out Of Town

These episodes always helped us kids learn a lesson about honesty! But the characters always threw a cool house party! Here's the classic dance scene from Saved By The Bell's house party episode. Similar parties happened on That 70's Show, Freaks and Geeks, Drake and Josh, and Home Improvement.

    4. Found Wallet

Again, this kind of episode teaches our main characters what to do in a difficult situation. Classic shows like Leave It To Beaver and the Brady Bunch covered this plot.

    5. Double Booked

Should you try to make it to both engagements? Or should you say something suddenly came up instead? These characters struggle to try not to upset their dates... and end up failing. Marcia from the Brady Bunch learned the hard way when she cancelled on boy-next-door Charlie after being asked to the dance by Doug, the big man on campus. But when she is hit in the face with a football... Doug breaks their date. Other shows who have double booked include Sex and the City, Cheers, Three's Company, and Malcolm in the Middle.

    6. The "Very Special Episode"

These eps were about as subtle as an after-school special. My all-time favorite is when Jessie from Saved by the Bell gets addicted to caffeine pills. Other examples include Diff'rent Strokes (which covered anything from child molestation to bulimia), Blossom, and Growing Pains. Parodies of these episodes include Seinfeld, Family Guy, Friends, and Mr. Show.

    7. The Accidental Kiss

"How do you accidentally kiss someone? Did she slip on a rug, and your lips broke her fall?" -Topanga from Boy Meets World

Other examples of this include Even Stevens, The Suite Life of Zack and Cody, Scrubs, and the West Wing.

    8. The Drag Disguise

I'm still getting over my PTSD from seeing male characters in drag. The show Bosom Buddies entire premise centered around this cliche. The main characters dressed in drag to get an NYC apartment. Other examples of the drag disguise include Three's Company, Saved by the Bell, iCarly, and Boy Meets World.

    9. "Oh no, Mom's favorite vase!"

Sitcom characters always find a way to break the most important items in their house. Protip: Don't play ball in the house. Other examples include Saved by the Bell, Family Matters, The Big Bang Theory, and Fraiser.

    10. The Prank Call

Is your refrigerator running? Well you better go catch it. Shows that have done this are Two of a Kind, the Amanda Show, the Dick Van Dyke Show, and Friends.

    11. The Awkward Sex Talk

Learning about the Birds and the Bees is never not awkward. Warning: The Roseanne clip is about masturbation and couldn't get more uncomfortable. Other conversations like this happened on Malcolm in the Middle, The OC, The Wonder Years, and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.
