Did NBC Just Air A Racist Commercial?
After Gabby Douglas won the gold and Bob Costas spoke about how amazing this was for the first African-American to win the women’s all-around gymnastics title, NBC aired a commercial of a Monkey doing gymnastics which has caused quite a stir. Racist, or just bad timing? Tons of people on Twitter seemed to think it was more on the racist side.

naturesk 10 months agoThen that would suggest that NBC pre-determined what commerical would be played for each of the athletics, if they won? Are you suggesting had another athletic won, The monkey doing the rings would not have been shown, rather something else? Because, I don’t accept that in 2012 that brown skin people are being compared to monkeys. Because whom ever made that decision to rep that brown girl in that why have lived on this earth long enough to know how it would it would fly (pro/con) or to young to know that history (thus used an acrobatic animal, for which it is to rep and found it funny). But, I am keeping my ears and eyes, and comments open……

dandel2 10 months agoSo, I guess we can’t use monkeys in commercials anymore. It’s automatically racist, even though it was just a coincidence. I don’t like black coffee, so I guess I don’t like black people. Gimme a break. This crying-racist stuff gets so old. Yes, racism still exists. No, that commercial is not racist.

andrewa15 10 months agoPeople who see a connection between a monkey in that commercial and that beautiful little girl are sick in the head. Really, if you have an automatic ‘dog whistle’ in your head that makes that ridiculous connection then you are mentally ill. No kidding, do the rest of us and yourself a favor and seek professional help.

carlh8 10 months agoBeing in advertising, I know we’re not smart enough to intentionally be that cruel. It isn’t something that NBC could have done anything about as the spot was placed prior and couldn’t have been pulled that quickly (that’s really true). An unfortunate accident, but understandable that many would find it offensive.

brendanmoore 10 months agoOh come on. Commercials for that show have been airing every single night and it’s a boy monkey doing the rings, an event that was not even shown that night. I really don’t think it was done on purpose. I gotta say that seeing the reactions, I wonder how many of the people that got upset about this were at Chick-fil-A on Wednesday. I kept hearing that day that civil rights and human rights were so different and that ‘the gays’ were just overreacting. Just saying…

Klo732 10 months agoIf Aly had won and then they showed a commercial for “crackers” I don’t think there would be a twitter uproar or a post on buzzfeed about it. I agree with other posts I have seen- making the connection is more racist then not making the connection. And I don’t want to hear that “I don’t know what it’s like, so I cannot understand” because I’ve had black people be racist against me for being white, I’ve had people be sexist against me for being a female. This does not cause me to always connect “cracker” to my race, or “bitch” or “slut” to my gender. I’m not sure if there are any co-ed competitions in the Olympics but if there were, I would not be upset if they played a commercial for PMS after a female won that sport.
