Welcome To The Rice Bucket Challenge. An Indian's Attempt To Raise Awareness Of Mass Hunger.

For all the controversy that surrounded the wastage of water in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, a reporter in Hyderabad, India decided to create her own spin on it.

Almost everyone agrees that the Ice Bucket Challenge is perfect for the American demographic. However, in other countries - like India - where the basic requirement of clean, drinking water isn't provided to everyone, the point of this challenge is lost.

Enter Manju Kalanidhi, a 38-year old journalist from Hyderabad, India. Her job consists of studying and reporting on the global rice market and therefore, she created her own spin. The challenge involves donating a bucket full of rice to someone in need, taking a picture with them and posting it to their social media profile by using the hashtag: #RiceBucketChallenge.

She took a photo with her neighbour, offering 50 pounds of rice, and posted it on her personal Facebook profile. Responses poured in by the hundreds, encouraging her to create a page for the campaign on August 22nd 2014. The "About" section of the Rice Bucket Challenge's FaceBook page explains the localisation of the challenge as an, "Indian version for Indian Needs". The page so far as clocked in over 54,000 likes in what Kalanidhi calls a "social tsunami".
