More Than 20 Injured When Concrete Structure Collapses On North Carolina Students

A truck crashed into a concrete canopy, trapping several students who were underneath the structure, officials say. Three were seriously injured.

More than two dozen people were injured at a North Carolina high school when part of a concrete canopy collapsed above them Saturday afternoon.

About 20 students are believed to be among the injured when a box truck hit a concrete canopy and caused the collapse, WBTV reported.

Fire officials reported several of the injured, including students, were trapped when they arrived at North Iredell High School in Olin, a community 12 miles north of Statesville.

Iredell County EMS officials told WBTV that 25 people were taken to nearby hospitals to be treated. Most of them were high school students.

Their injuries ranged from minor to life-threatening.

According to an official calendar, the high school was hosting a band competition and SAT tests at the time of the collapse.

Three people were believed to have suffered possibly life-threatening injuries, WXII reported.

Most of the injured are believed to have been students from South Iredelll High in Troutman, according to the Charlotte Observer.

The truck was carrying band equipment for the competition, an official said.
