Chennai is in the midst of the worst rains it has seen in over 100 years. At least 280 people have died, and hundreds more are missing.
Of those affected is cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin, a Chennai resident, who is currently playing the 4th test match between India and South Africa in New Delhi.
While he was batting on the first day of the match on December 4, what a lot of people didn't know was that he hadn't been able to contact his parents due to the floods for over 24 hours prior.
He came in to bat with India in trouble at 198/7, while his wife Prithi Ashwin was tweeting for help to get in touch with them.
While Ashwin steered India to safety, his wife was finally able to establish contact with them as the day's play came to an end.
And despite all the turmoil and anguish, Ashwin still managed to take the team to a position of strength by scoring a half century.
