10 Weird (But Yummy) Foods From Around The World

We've all heard or read about them. Hell, we've seen shows on TV about them. Some of them might look scary but are actually pretty yummy. What are the weirdest food that you tried? Which one of these would you try?

1. Nattō (aka one of the VIPs of weird foods)

Yes, I tried this. No, scratch that: I eat this. Regularly. And yes, I love it, despite its smell and its slimy texture. Try it with rice, karashi (japanese mustard) and a dash of soy sauce. Yum!

2. Sanguinaccio

You probably won't realize what this is by reading its italian name, but abroad this is called blood sausage. It's basically a mixture of blood, fat and rice or something similar cooked and then served as a salami. Very strong taste, but really nice with toast! Don't knock it 'till you try it...

3. Cervella Fritte

Looks good, doesn't it? No that scary, huh? Well, think again. Those are brain fritters. Yep. Brains. Fried. Yum, right? No? Actually yeah, they are pretty tasty, as is everything fried which ends up tasting of... fried food.

4. Haggis

What could be more appealing than innards cooked inside intestines? I ate this in the UK. Savory, tasty. Just don't think about what's in it. Trust me, just don't.

5. Fegato alla Veneziana

This is a typical dish from Venice, in northern Italy. It's a simple dish as it only uses two cheap ingredients: liver and onions. Yep, just saute the onions in butter, add the chopped liver, let it cook and serve with polenta.

6. Trippa alla Milanese

Not sure whether this looks yummy or not. Maybe I'm just too used to seeing this and I just can't be objective. Believe it or not, this is very popular in Milan (Italy) and in many other cities around the Country. It's tripe served with beans, sage and tomato sauce. Great in winter! (And yes, tripe is stomach)

7. Durian (The King of Fruit)

How can I not mention this? You either love it or hate it. As far as I'm concerned it wasn't love at first sight (let alone smell), I'd say it's an acquired taste. But once you go over its horrible pungent smell, it tastes pretty good! Sweet and custardy... Oh and btw. Me 1 - Zimmern 0. I win this round, man!

8. Ricci di Mare

These babies are a real delicacies in Southern Italy, where are often eaten straight from the sea, halved and scooped out using your fingers. Great with pasta, on bread or just as they are, sea urchins aren't that weird here. They're kinda as precious as caviar. Aaaaand now I want some.

9. Bollito Di Lingua Di Manzo

Looks pretty standard right? Well this is another one of those dishes that are typical here in Italy, especially in the north. It's called "Bollito" and it's basically a dish with different cuts of meat that are boiled with vegetables and then served with sauces like salsa verde. This is one of my favorites as a kid: the tongue. Beef tongue, to be exact. Still yummy? Yep, juicy, tender and super tasty.

10. Fried Worms

Last, but not least, bamboo worms. Fried. Tried them in the UK and they taste like chips (or crisps), crunchy and delish! I wonder if the version above would be tastier with all those green onions...
