mauser*girl 5 months agoSomeone please explain to me how gun control would have prevented this tragedy. The shooter entered the school carrying two handguns. He did not own them and did not purchase them. His state requires people to be over 21 to own a handgun. He was 20. It also requires an eligibility certificate from the police, basically a handgun permit, which includes mandatory training and interview. Having Asperger’s, he probably would not have qualified even if he were old enough. The firearms were legally owned and registered to his mother from whom he stole them. The assault rifle he had was a .223 Bushmaster AR-15. It was not used in the crime. Police found it in the cat parked outside the school. We once again have a criminal with stolen weapons, but bad reporting and people responding emotionally rather than logically want to ban legal ownership. Makes no sense,.

mtbeconomist 5 months agoI hate when gun supporters use this argument. Yes, this would not have happened if these weapons were not publicly available. Look at the gun crime rates in counties with much tighter restrictions than ours and please grow a soul.

pipt 5 months agoAustralia had a massive gun ownership rate until 1996 when a guy took a automatic weapon and killed 35 people, then we put in gun laws. There was an amnesty, people were paid to hand in their weapons or face really tough licensing requirements. Weapons that were automatic or with magazines that held more than five bullets were banned. Everyone was happy to comply. How many massacres have we had since then?
None.

keighty 5 months agoI am heartbroken by today’s events. My thoughts are with the families of the victims. I really try not to post controversial opinions, but I can’t help noticing how many people I’ve seen immediately use today’s tragedy to call for more gun control. Meanwhile, I have not heard one person say anything about the way we treat mental illness in this country. Maybe if we removed the stigma associated with mental disease and made it easier for people to seek treatment, we would not have so many tragedies like this.
