Did Joss Whedon Sum Up Exactly Why There Aren't More Women In Comic Book Movies?

Whedon in a recently released interview said comic book movies were suffering from "intractable sexism."

Digital Spy recently released an interview with director Joss Whedon on the set of Avengers: Age Of Ultron over the summer. Whedon was extremely critical of the way the comic book movie industry treats female characters.

Whedon praised female-driven science fiction like The Hunger Games and said that Marvel was in a good place to do a female-led movie, only he believed that Marvel's best female characters are owned by Fox, who has the rights to the X-Men franchise.

Digital Spy's interview was conducted before Marvel announced its first female superhero movie, Captain Marvel.

BuzzFeed News has reached out to Whedon for further comment.

This isn't the first time Whedon has been critical about the movie industry's reluctance to showcase strong female characters. In his 2006 acceptance speech for an Equality Now award, he spoke about the questions he gets about his own female characters.
