      And when most dogs howl, they don’t do so laying down on the ground. Maybe it’s because I have a beagle who bays more than he barks, but there isn’t much of a difference to the sound he makes when he is in pain. This dog does not look happy.

      Most vets and animal researchers think dogs howl at sounds like this and sirens because they are trying to “howl back” to communicate, ie notify the “creature” of their presence - not because it hurts their ears. They don’t howl at dog whistles or loud fireworks, they bark. http://scienceline.ucsb.edu/getkey.php?key=200
