Saudi Women Are Tweeting Photos Of Themselves Voting For The First Time

Since the election over the weekend, women have been sharing photos of the moment they cast their vote in the historic election.

For the first time in the country’s history, Saudi Arabia has opened its ballots to women.

In the historic election, which took place at the weekend, 130,000 women registered to vote and 978 ran as candidates.

At least 20 women won municipal council seats across the country, according to the AP.

Since the historic election took place, women in Saudi Arabia have been sharing photos of themselves voting for the first time.

Many women across the country tweeted photos of themselves outside the voting room, saying it was their "right to vote."

The women who were elected are being praised by supporters in the country for making history.

Women first began registering to vote in August, but the ruling to allow women to vote was first announced by King Abdullah in 2011.
