The Marriage Wars Get Personal For Maggie Gallagher

Gay Republican protest candidate Fred Karger speculated to reporters that Gallagher, former National Organization for Marriage president, is divorced. “We are still married and living together,” an unfazed Gallagher tells BuzzFeed.

Fred Karger, the gay Republican presidential candidate and former Reagan aide, sent out a press release today speculating that Maggie Gallagher, one of the nation’s staunchest opponents of gay marriage, has either divorced her husband of 18 years or was never married to him at all. Gallagher, for her part, denies, but the accusation makes a fight over policy intensely personal.

The charges, per Karger’s release:

“I asked Maggie if she was still living in New York, and she told me that she moved to Washington, DC nearly three years ago. What about her husband Raman Srivastav? She allegedly married this East Indian man 19 years ago after living as an unwed mother for 11 years. No one has ever seen Maggie with Raman. Wonder if they really did get married? If so, maybe so he could get a green card?”

Karger also flags the absence of a wedding ring on Gallagher’s finger.

Karger told BuzzFeed that the decision to attack Gallagher personally came after the leak of NOM documents that intended to exacerbate a rift between gays and black people.

“I’ve been very aggressive against NOM, after reading those documents,” Karger said. “They’re just unbelievable.”

“I’m taking the gloves off,” he said. “I’ve been a little reticent to go after [Gallagher] personally, but no more.”

Gallagher laughed when asked about Karger’s speculation, and said “I think I would know better than Fred.”

Gallagher, who was a single mother for years after college, says she married her husband Raman Srivastav in Arizona in 1993: “We are still married and living together. He’s a very private person.”

“They just make up all kind of stuff about me,” she said. “It doesn’t really matter. I could be divorced and I still could not be for gay marriage. I don’t really see that it’s relevant. It is a fact — I am in fact married. I’ve only been married once. I am not about to get a divorce.”

Nobody is making things up. She doesn’t wear a ring and her husband is never seen. Her hypocrisy hurts. If her marriage is irrelevant to others how can she say the marriage of gay people is relevant to her? Why does she can say if the marriage of others should be recognized?

    • Does it really surprise anyone that Maggie Gallagher’s husband is a silent partner in their marriage? When you support an agenda that reeks of hypocrisy, people tend to not want to be put in the spotlight. If Maggie truly believed in protecting marriage and keeping children with their parents, she’d be doing everything in her power to stop straight couples (95% of the country) from divorcing instead of preventing a small sliver of the populous from getting a civil marriage. Does anyone really have to ask which one harms children the most? Especially when same-sex parents don’t harm children at all. When Maggie falsely claims that children have a right to a mother and a father, is it any wonder why Mr. Srivastav is nowhere to be seen? If her statement were even the slightest bit true, she would be tirelessly trying to prevent straight couples from giving their kids up for adoption. Doesn’t adoption tear children away from their biological parents? She also doesn’t seem too concerned that millions of single-parents are raising children. (Has anyone ever heard NOM talk about that?) Apparently those children don’t need a mommy and a daddy as long as their one parent is straight. So instead of dealing with the real ways children are separated from their parents, let’s only focus on those gay couples that have selflessly adopted children that straight couples have discarded. I’m sure they were better off at the orphanage anyway. Right, Maggie?
