Crowd Boos Santorum For Comparing Gay Marriage To Polygamy

CONCORD, N.H. -- Rick Santorum drew a hostile response at a town hall meeting here after he compared same-sex marriage to polygamy.
A college-age audience member at a town hall meeting in Concord asked Santorum "how you justify your belief based on these morals you have about all men being created equal when two men who want to marry the person that they love --"
Santorum cut her off and said "What about three men?"
"It's important that if we're going to have a discussion based on rational thought, that we employ reason. Reason says that if you think it's ok for two, you have to differentiate with me why it's not OK for three. Let's just have a discussion about what that means. If she reflects the values that marriage can be for anybody or any group of people, as many as is necessary, any two people or any three or four, marriage really means whatever you want it to mean."
At this point the crowd applauded -- apparently cheering the idea that "marriage really means whatever you want it to mean.
Santorum continued: "Here's my point of view. And we're done talking about this issue, we're going to move on to something else."
He went on to laud the traditional marriage, saying that "I think that’s something society should value and give status over a group of people who want to have a relationship together."
Some in the crowd booed him after that statement.

One can try to guess what the relevant similarities are in the analogues of same-sex marriage to PIB. If the reason Santorum brings it up is because he assumes these two groups want to “marry anybody they love” then he is incorrent. Gays and lesbians aren't asking to marry anybody they love, but somebody they love. Such distinction is important because if a polygamous man loves two women, presumably he can love at least one. Anything else is seeking additional rights. Now, I'm not saying that this is right or wrong, but the answer to that question won't be arrived at by looking more closely at same-sex marriage. Of course another approach is to not assume at all what the relevant similarities are in the analogues and simply shift the burder of proof back to him. Polygamy is just as fine as gay marriage. They both require consenting adults who love each other. As a non American, I just don’t understand why people like this get taken seriously.

“We're done talking about this issue.” What a shitty human being. He clearly has no idea what it means to be President. It doesn't mean you can just ignore whatever issues you don't like. It doesn't mean you can talk over a citizen of this country, someone who has a stake in its future, like a crybaby asshole. You know, while we're on the subject… Why is polygamy so bad? I'd NEVER do it, but if it's not hurting anybody else, who am I to judge? Marriage should simply be a pledge to love someone and make a family with someone until you part from one another. It's nothing more, nothing less.

I understand the slippery slope argument in regards to gay marriage. It's not a good argument though. If he is against polygamy and gay marriage. Yet the bible allows for polygamy. So his opposition to polygamy is based on todays social standards. Standards that change over time. It's not a good argument. Me, I'm christian but I don't pretend to know the mind of God. The Bible is a great book, inspired by God but written by men. Regarding gay marriage, it's hard to say something wrought out of love is a bad thing.
