Belle Gibson, the disgraced health blogger who claimed she cured her own cancer with a diet and fitness regime, has at least one defender: Her estranged mother.
Gibson's mother Natalie Dal-Bello has spoken to The Herald Sun and defended what she called her daughter's "white lies."
Dal-Ballo said she wanted to reach out to her daughter after seeing her "humiliated" during a tell-all interview with 60 Minutes, likening the experience to committing suicide.
"Belle told a white lie, aged 23-and-a-half. So what?" Ms Dal-Bello said in her first interview since her daughter's super awkward appearance on the show.
"Belle is allowed to tell little porky pies. Who the hell doesn't tell a lie in their life?"
Gibson, who built an empire on her health claims, has been under fire since it was revealed earlier this year that she has never had cancer.
Dal-Ballo said Gibson had inspired people through her popular blog, health app and cook book, but now her life is unfairly being put under a microscope.
Dal-Ballo's words are a far cry from Gibson's April interview with Australian Women's Weekly, where she blamed her mother for many of her problems.
Shortly after Gibson spoke to the Women's Weekly her mother hit back, saying she was "deeply hurt and incredibly upset" by her daughter's claims.
In that interview, the 23-year-old says she never knew her father, her mother suffered multiple sclerosis and her brother is autistic. Gibson also claimed that she had a lot of responsibility for herself and her family from the age of five.
"What a lot of rubbish," Dal-Ballo said. "Belle never cared for me, her brother is not autistic and she's barely done a minute's housework in her life. I've practically worked myself into an early grave to give that girl everything she wanted in life."
Despite the harsh words just a few months ago, Dal-Ballo says she's hoping Gibson will reach out to contact her after four years of estrangement.
