The Civil War? Really? Other than Denzel in “Glory,” I can’t name one.
Here’s a funny game: who’s got the highest tally? Helen Mirren in The Queen probably makes it to four: she’s famous, speaks with an accent, she’s old and a bit ugly. Still I’d say Adrien Brody in The Pianist pulls off an impressive five. He’s famous (kind of), has a funny accent (once his jaw gets messed up from undernourishment), he’s pretty ugly in the first place, he experiences the Holocaust and he plays the piano. Any better?
Three easy steps to win a Best Director Oscar:
1) Be a famous actor
2) Put a camera on a tripod
3) Run horses in front of it It worked for directing hacks Kevin Costner, Clint Eastwod and Mel Gibson. Also, Robert Redford actually won a best director Oscar for “Ordinary People” so really I guess you just have to be a famous actor and any POS you direct can win an Oscar.
