This Is Why Proposing On A Lake Is Always A Very Bad Idea

Sometimes it's best not to overthink these things.

This video of a wedding proposal appearing to go horribly wrong was uploaded to YouTube last week and has already been watched almost three million times.

According to New York Daily News, the clip shows a guy, known only as Shane, popping the question to his girlfriend Cheri while enjoying a paddle boat ride with friends on the Wisconsin River near Muscoda, US.

The video shows a group of people on the shore holding up a sign, which apparently reads: "Will You Marry Me?"

Shane, who goes by the username Swilk 16 on YouTube, is then seen presenting his girlfriend with a ring.

In her apparent excitement at the proposal though, Cheri accidentally knocks the ring out of Shane's hand and into the lake.

Cue panic, tears and lots of OMG faces.

Elias Eitser, a friend who claims to have witnessed the alleged event unfold, told New York Daily News the group searched for two days but never recovered the ring.

Given that there is very little known about the couple and the fact the video is Swilk 16's only ever upload, there has been some speculation the video may have been staged.

BuzzFeed News has reached out to the YouTube user for comment and will update if they reply and/or more information comes to light.
