This Is Officially The Best Optical Illusion Of The Year

    Mind blown.

The "Dynamic Ebbinghaus" has been named the Neural Correlate Society's best illusion of the year.

It features a black circle, which actually stays the same size, but appears to change when surrounded by a set of circles that grow and shrink over time.

The society notes: “Interestingly, this effect is relatively weak when looking directly at a stationary central circle. But if you look away from the central circle or move your eyes, or if the entire stimulus move across the screen, then the illusory effect is surprisingly strong – at least twice as large as the classic, static Ebbinghaus illusion.”

Some of the other illusions that made the Top 10 were: "A Turn in the Road".

This features three strips of road and asks the viewer to point out which one they think looks different.

    The final result is surprising.

The "Pigeon-Neck Illusion" generates apparent reverse motion – similar to the action of a pigeon's neck when it walks.

The "Rotating McThatcher Illusion" demonstrates the fact our unconscious ability to lipread "is influenced by processes considered idiosyncratic to face perception".

The information on the illusion says it combines two well-known effects – the McGurk effect and the Margaret Thatcher effect.

"Infinite Maze" is a Pac-man-inspired video game for Android built around an optical illusion.

The game features an "infinite" maze, which despite looking like a regular Pac-man maze is actually randomly re-generated with every move.

Apparently many players fail to notice the illusion.

Arguably the best illusion recognised by the society in recent years was the 2010 winner – "Impossible motion: magnet-like slopes".
