More intelligent is highly debated because scientists have no way to accurately measure intelligence, either in paleo humans or modern humans. Many people conflate “intelligence” with the fact that they made tools a differently and had different lifeways than did H. erectus or Cro-Magnon. It doesn’t mean they were smarter, it just meant they did things differently, as did all Homo progenitors. Their brains *were* bigger but their heads were also larger than H. erectus and H. sapiens sapiens (us), so their larger brains were there to fill their larger skull cavities, it does not confer a greater intelligence. In fact, many of our most recent ancestors had much larger brains than modern humans, whose brains have been measurably shrinking over the last 10,000 or so years (as measured by cranial capacity). Most modern humans already contain H. neanderthalensis DNA because our forebears had lots of sexy sex with them.
