I think it's because of the part "even when it's almost full". If the theater is almost full and you leave a small gap, someone in another group may have to sit by themselves because there are only single seats left. That being said, I still don't think it's a big deal.

In Hawaii, it's actually called Discoverer's Day, not Columbus Day. So I don't even feel bad getting a day off from it :)
