Photojournalists (like this one) are vital in these situations.  Yes they can't help stop the violence, but they need to be there to document for us, so we can remember, and hopefully learn from the encounter. Now if only their police were up to the task. Our police (in the US) can become this inept if we keep forcing them to be social therapists instead of the first line of defense from people like this.
