Target certainly has the right to sell or not sell this costume as it so chooses. But to cave to a “rights” group because they find it offensive is a bit weak on their part. First off, illegal aliens by definition don't have the right to be here. So the only way for them to be offended, is by themselves offending the sensibilities of every law-abiding person here. While they are within the United States they are protected by our laws, but the laws also prescribe deportation. So for a so-called “illegal immigrant rights” group to exist in the first place is contradictory in and of itself. But the larger matter is that we really shouldn't worry about offending people. If everything we did was filtered so as to avoid offending some group of people or another, there would be no such thing as comedy. Of course, offensive speech and behavior sometimes go to far and cross a line into racism and other hateful manifestations. And in these instances, outrage and condemnation are appropriate. But we can't live by some rule that tries to avoid outrage of that sort by avoiding any and all material that may be deemed offensive by someone.
