Former Nathan's hot dog eating champion Takeru Kobayashi attempted to break the world fruitcake eating record, but fell 5 ounces short when the ten minute time limit expired. The record, set in 2001, of 4 pounds and 12 ounces is still intact. Kobayashi said the density of the fruitcake caused him problems. The competition was sponsored by The Food Bank of New York City
