A Father Was Reportedly Killed When He Wouldn't Hand Over His Money For Christmas Gifts

Miguel Haro promised to get his 10-year-old daughter a tablet for Christmas. Chicago police told BuzzFeed News the investigation is ongoing.

Miguel Haro, a 44-year-old father of two, was killed in Chicago on Sunday after refusing to hand over his wallet to a robber.

Haro and another man were working on a house on Chicago's South Side Sunday night when they were approached by two robbers.

Police said that the robbers ordered both to kneel, then pistol-whipped the other man before taking his money and phone.

But Haro, who spoke Spanish and may not have understood the robbers, was shot multiple times after he reportedly hesitated to hand over his wallet.

He was pronounced dead at 6:19 p.m. at Holy Cross Hospital, a spokesman with the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office told BuzzFeed News.

Haro's family told NBC Chicago that the construction worker had just gotten paid and was planning to use the money to get his daughters, ages 4 and 10, Christmas gifts.

Haro had promised to get his 10-year-old daughter Janny a tablet for Christmas. Now she says she just wants "for him to come back."

Haro's niece Marisol Gomez told WGN he was a hardworking, honest man, adding that he sent the little money he had left over to his parents in Mexico.

"He didn't harm anybody," Janny Haro said. "He had a lot of friends who cared about him and he cared about them."

Police are still looking for the robbers who killed Haro, with a spokeswoman telling BuzzFeed News that the investigation is "open and ongoing."

Several of Haro's family members could not be reached for comment.
