Yes, I suppose it does make sense to leave only one space after a full stop. I do not know where the practice originated, all I know is that I was instructed to use two spaces when I was a schoolboy.
The only case I can think of for a double space is it gives pause to the reader especially when reading aloud but it would be nice to learn the correct practice. Unfortunately, none of my references to grammar or correct writing practice, provide a clue.
