While legalizing some things currently classified as crimes may not be a bad idea, I think we need more definiteness. First of all, shoplifting is a “non-violent crime,” but I don't want to legalize it. So is trespass and having sex or excreting in public. I'm not ready to legalize any of those things. Secondly, you can't just argue that arresting people costs money, ergo legalizing those things will save money. When you arrest people for prostitution or smoking weed, they usually end up getting fined. If they get the case dismissed as a one-time only deal, then yes, that costs money. But fining people for having a joint, no, that MAKES the county money.
