Contrary to popular belief some bullies can actually fight…so sometimes standing up for yourself only comes with a more serious beat down…”Manning Up” is a stupid phrase

    • Substitute “teasing” for “bullying” and maybe he would have had a point. Being treated as though you have no worth as a human being by the people you’re surrounded by every day, though, isn’t something you can “man-up” from. It can only be survived.  Unpleasantness is a part of life that everyone has to deal with, and some forms of hardship have to be suffered through in order for a person to mature. Bullying isn’t one of them.

    • In other news, Brett Easton Ellis wrote a book where a guy chopped a hooker in half, and then inserted a tube into the upper half of her body and fed into it a giant rat.  So basically he’s still trying to top that career high.

    • Straight guys get so defensive about this. YES for STRAIGHT MALES (particularly white ones) bullying can be a rite of passage. You get pushed around, you stand up for yourself, you earn mutual respect from the other guys. You eventually get accepted into the herd. Guess what? For gay guys (and sometimes “ethnic” guys) the bullying never ends, because no matter how much you stand up for yourself the herd of insecure testosterone-juiced teenagers harassing you will NEVER EVER accept you. The more you fight back the quicker the situation deteriorates. If you actually beat somebody up he’ll take it as a blow to his manhood and come at you even more viciously, possibly even with weapons (this is how gay-bashings get started). Why is it so f-ing impossible for people to see the world from a perspective other than their own? Just because something works for you doesn’t mean EVERYBODY has the same opportunities or experience.

It’s easy to say deal with it, but what if the kid’s method of dealing with it is to get a gun and shoot some folks, or themselves? Kids today don’t know how to deal with adversity. This perfect, delicate snowflake mentality that kids are raised with today is warping their perception of the world, to the point that kids are not prepared for the realities of life when they finally get to a place where mom and dad aren’t there to protect them.  Gotta toughen those kids up early. Life can be brutal and cruel sometimes. Parents are not doing their kids any favors by trying to hide that fact from them.

I can’t help but notice that kids seem to get more evil with each passing year. I was bullied myself, but I guess I can count myself lucky that it wasn’t to the degree that most kids seem to be suffering today. When I was a kid, I thank God that there wasn’t Facebook or Twitter; heck, I didn’t even bother with an email address for myself. With the constant evolution of social networking, bullying will continue to follow children home; there is just no stopping it once it reaches that point. And with the constant badgering of it and no safe haven to go to, it just becomes too much. If nothing is done, it’ll only get worse.

It makes sense to tell your kid to deal with it, but what if they don’t know how? What if they can’t begin to do it alone? I mean, I see what he means, but push em in the right direction. Times are a’changing, and so are how we deal with things. And well, bullies are changing too, ya douche. So, you have to deal with that.

When I was a kid, there were no child labor laws. When our parents forced us to work in pitch-black coal mines for 12 to 18 hours a day, we manned up, and only *most* of us died before puberty. Wait a minute… come to think of it, that was awful. Maybe change is good sometimes, and making sweeping statements about how today’s kids should be forced to deal with everything that past generations dealt with is complete bullshit.

    • jeremyw8 a year ago

He has a point. I got pushed around through all of school. And of course it mattered to me then. But you don’t teach a kid to stand up for himself by glorifying his already imbalanced emotions. No, you let him man up an hit back.

    • Joe P. Antone a year ago

I like the guy, LOVE his books, but not agree. Every people and situations are not the same. You don’t say to a 12 years old kid “Just man-up!”.

    • ohaisup a year ago

I grew up with a stutter, was short and fat, and my last name was real easy pickings for insulting-name-puns. Guess what? I dealt with it. I learned to laugh at it, and life got better. I stood up for myself too, and the assholes backed down. Life isn’t easy, it wasn’t meant to be. With that being said,I do realize it is very sad when someone commits suicide and there are times that there are cases of bullying so strong that there needs to be some sort of extra help - there is no reason why someone should commit suicide just cause some jackass is bullying some poor kid to that point.

    • hueyrocks a year ago

I always laugh when people get upset over someone’s opinion. They find every little thing to put them down. Now who’s being obnoxious?

    • rachel707 a year ago

He comes off as a total cock, but the idea of dealing with it isn’t a bad one. No matter how big the anti-bullying movement is, bullying will always exist. You’re never going to tell kids who are essentially little fucked up sociopaths not to do something and have them comply 100% of the time.

Who cares? Everyone knows this guy is a douche bag. Go back to the 80’s when you were relevant, Brett.
