“I had originally tried to memorize the whole thing,” Barth said. “Then when we were unable to shoot it the first time, I lost some of my edge on that.”

Some of the zany edge to the ad that so captivated the Internet audience may have come from Barth’s ad-libs.

“I absolutely was kind of winging it a little,” he said, though he generally followed the script.

Some of the props in the ad were added digitally, such as the explosion. Others were definitely real, such as the rubber chicken that fell from the sky after Barth appeared to fire an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle into the air.

The rear-facing horse was a cardboard cutout, with a digitally added wagging tail.

One thing Barth wouldn’t confirm is whether the gunshot was real.

Barth also described his ostrich ride, at the age of 16 while living in South Africa, as comfortable and smooth.

Of late, Barth has become more of a serious contender against his opponent for the Democratic nomination to face Rep. Kristi Noem, Matt Varilek, who's picked up endorsements from Sen. Tim Johnson as well as Tom Daschle and George McGovern.

Argus Leader reporter David Montgomery, who's been following the race closely, said that "Until a few weeks ago, Barth was a major underdog in the Dem House primary. He'd raised less than $20k from others and had no endorsements."

"Now between this ad and Varilek losing some activist support by opposing gay marriage, we've got an actual race for the primary," Montgomery said.

The version of the defense appropriateions bill that passed through markup in the Senate Armed Services Committee Thursday afternoon does not include an amendment to "strike the current ban on domestic dissemination" of propaganda says Glen Caplin, Communicaitons Director for Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, who is a member of the committee.

The move marks a setback for the approval of Reps. Mac Thornberry and Adam Smith’s controversial amendment to the House version of the bill, which repeals the Smith-Mundt Act of 1948. The House amendment’s press release states that it will “help counter threats in the information age” by lessening restrictions on how foreign information campaigns are shared with U.S. citizens.

Critics, however, said altering the Smith-Mundt Act allow the State Department and Broadcasting Board of Governors to target propaganda materials at U.S. audiences.

Even though the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) that passed through Senate committee includes no mention of altering the Smith-Mundt Act, it remains possible for an amendment allowing for domestic propaganda to be introduced on the Senate floor, or added when the House and Senate versions of the bill are reconciled.

It is unclear how much support Thornberry and Smith's amendment has in the Senate, but it faces some opposition.

"Senator Gillibrand is hopeful this troubling language will remain out of the Senate bill and stripped out in conference committee when the House and Senate bills are reconciled,” Caplin said.

Senate Armed Services Committee Chair Carl Levin declined to comment on the bill until the NDAA press release is completed.

"It's not really cool. It's pretty nasty," said Gary Kenzer, who runs the Chicago-based Polish-American advocacy group, and described also the term as "inappropriate."

Polish-Americans prefer the noun "Pole."

"It's not very nice. It's just not nice," Kenzer continued. "What a loose cannon this guy is. Truly a loose cannon. What the hell?"

Barry, now a D.C. council member, referred to Poles as "Polacks" at a press conference today.

Barry at first denied that he had said "Polack," and then said that he had meant to say "Poles."

"There just isn't a good way to talk about this," Kenzer told BuzzFeed. "Like the jokes, they're just not funny. This is consistent with [Barry's] credibility. I don't know if you have access to this man but he needs to apologize yet again."

A member of Barry's staff didn't immediately return a request for comment.

"This is a very large group in the United States," said Kenzer. "Most people don't think about Poles being that big, but particularly here in Chicago there's almost a million Poles in the metropolitan area."

"This is unacceptable," he said.

Update: Barry's office issued a statement Friday morning addressing the comment: "I misspoke. I should have said, Polish."

- "My dad was a coach and a history teacher. He got a job with the CIA and became a diplomat for the U.S. government." Countries lived in: Iceland, Germany, Belgium, and "even Lesotho."

- "I lived in Germany before they built the Berlin Wall. I lived in Germany when they built the Berlin Wall."

- "I learned chess in Iceland." (He was also the state chess champion in 1993.)

- Barth bicycled through Great Britain, "afraid of nuclear war the whole time."

President Barack Obama's presidential campaign cancelled a planned ad buy in Iowa, North Carolina, Ohio, and Virginia this week — the same states where Mitt Romney has gone up with ads.

According to an Obama campaign source, the move is just "reweighting markets" which happens frequently, and not a change in strategy. The campaign has launched over a half-dozen television spots in the past few weeks — part of a $25 million campaign in May.

The Obama campaign purchased new airtime next week, though the scale is as yet undetermined, according to a media buyer. The new purchase includes both 30 second and 2-minute spots.
