Craft Wars: DIY Cupcake Toppers

Separate your cupcakes from the rest with these two ideas.

First, Chelsea at Making Home Base created Valentine’s card toppers.

Here’s how she did it.

Collect your materials: card stock cut to about 1” x 1 1/2”, twine (she used red and white twine from Twinery), glue, scraps of felt, washi tape, and toothpicks or plastic sticks.

Measure out and cut two pieces of twine to fit diagonally across your piece of card stock. Then, glue the twine pieces in an X by placing a dot of glue onto each corner.

For the edging, take two pieces of washi tape (one for the longer sides and one for the shorter sides) and cut them in half. Tape them along the sides of the card stock.

Now you have what looks like a little letter; all you need is the love part. Using a scrap piece of felt, cut out a little heart and glue it onto the center of your love note.

Lastly, glue your toothpick to the back of the note to secure it.

Edible Valentines are always the best.

Next up, April from The Gingerbread Blog creates geometric clay decorations.

All you’ll need are: toothpicks, clay (she used Poly form brand), any kitchen utensils handy for cutting clay (she used a pizza cutter).

For a circle shape: Break off a piece of clay and roll it into a burrito shape.
Cut it into slices, mold it into your circle shape and stick your toothpick into the end.

For a triangle shape: Roll your clay into a burrito shape. Use a knife or pizza cutter to flatten your clay. Then cut your clay at a diagonal, making a series of triangle shapes. Mold your triangles and stick toothpick into the bottom.

For a square shape: Repeat the steps for a triangle and press two of them together to make a square. Bake your toppers according to the directions on the package (hers took about 15 minutes). Allow to dry and decorate your party treats!
