What We Know About The Tsarnaev Brothers’ Taste In Rap Music

They gravitated toward socially conscious lyrics.

1. Dzhokhar Tsarnaev tweeted this Eminem lyric from “Forgot About Dre” one day after the bombing.

“Forgot About Dre,” released back in 2000, is basically just an anti-haters song.

2. Tamerlan Tsarnaev, Dzhokhar’s older brother, liked a few rap videos on his YouTube account. He was clearly very fond of the Russian musician Vasya Oblomov.

Vasya Oblomov (aka Vasya Goncharov) is a Russian musician, producer, and viral YouTube star in the Russian blogosphere, according to the Moscow News. And according to Wow Moscow, a Moscow city guide website, Oblomov is regarded by journalists as belonging to a group of “socially active” musicians — his music covering issues of his “homeland, the cops, bureaucrats,” and lines in hospitals.

Vasya Oblomov, “Кто хочет стать милиционером?” (“Who wants to be a policeman?”)

This one appears to be about police corruption in Russia. Here’s a sample of the lyrics from a Google translation of lyrics posted to SongMeanings.com:

If someone does not count, passers-by get.
I can not find you, for example, a package of grass,
Do not pay - the process will be steeper than that of Kafka.
Judge local too, not just on the rise -
Its list price starts figure of one million.
Well, there will overwrite the investigator business -
“When arrested, found next to the dead body …”
In the end, you will pay and sit down, my friend,
This is not your fourths and fifths circle.
Check the documents of persons of Caucasian nationality
And the people belonging to different degrees of marginality.
Work parties and other combat skills,
Go to the detention cells.
- My son was beaten by the cops, he suffered from them.
- No, Mama, he’s just dropped!
Who wants to be a policeman, police officer, policeman.
Who wants to be a police officer, police officers, where are you?

The lyrics of this song resonate with one of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev’s favorite jokes, which he posted on VK.com:

Vasya Oblomov, “Поганенький у нас народ” (“So Good We the People”)

Vasya Oblomov and Mr. Nice, “Налет Якубовича” (“Plaque Jakubowicz”)

Oblomov is best known for his song “Magadan,” which has a viral video with over 3.6 million views.

Here’s a translation of the lyrics from LyricsTranslate.com:

3. This song by Vinnie Paz was the only non-Oblomov song in Tsarnaev’s YouTube likes. It’s also the only video in English.

Vinnie Paz is half of hip-hop duo Jedi Mind Tricks, along with rapper Jus Allah. The group’s most recent studio album, Violence Begets Violence, was released in 2011. Paz and Jedi Mind Tricks are known for rapping about conspiracy theories, including Illuminati and New World Order, and feature a lot of heavy-metal influence throughout their work. The Italian-American rapper converted to from Catholicism to Islam in high school and frequently references his faith on Jedi Mind Trick songs. “Peaceful Islam / Vinnie on his deen and he calm,” he raps on “Kingdom Crusher,” from his 2012 solo album, God of the Serengeti. “End of Days,” which Tsarnaev liked, is from his debut solo album, 2010’s Season of the Assassin.

Vinnie Paz featuring Block Mccloud, “End of Days”

The lyrics of this one go heavy into conspiracy theory:

The greatest form of control is when you think you’re free when you’re being fundamentally manipulated and dictated to. One form of dictatorship is being in a prison cell and you can see the bars and touch them. The other one is sitting in a prison cell but you can’t see the bars but you think you’re free.

What the human race is suffering from is mass hypnosis. We are being hypnotized by people like this: newsreaders, politicians, teachers, lecturers. We are in a country and in a world that is being run by unbelievably sick people. The chasm between what we’re told is going on and what is really going on is absolutely enormous.

[Chorus: Block McCloud]

It’s like we all know what’s going down
But no one’s saying shit, what happened to the home of the brave?
These motherfuckers they’re controlling us now
But no one’s talking about it, made us proud to be slaves

And everybody’s just walking around
Head in the clouds, we won’t awake until we’re dead in the grave
By then it’s too late, we need to be ready to raise up
Welcome to the end of days

[Verse 1: Vinnie Paz]

Everybody is slave, only some are aware
That the government releasing poison in the air
That’s the reason I collect so many guns in my lair
I ain’t never caught slipping, never underprepared
Yeah, The Shaytan army, they just break it proudly
George Bush the grandson of Aleister Crowley
They want you to believe the lie that the enemy Saudi
The enemy ain’t Saudi, the enemy around me
There’s fluoride in the water but nobody know that
It’s also a prominent ingredient in Prozac (for real?)
How could any government bestow that?
A proud people who believe in political throwback
That’s not all that I’m here to present you
I know about the black pope in Solomon’s Temple
Yeah, about the Vatican assassins and how they will get you
And how they cloned Barack Hussein Obama in a test tube

[Chorus]

[Verse 2: Vinnie Paz]

Whoever built the pyramids had knowledge of electrical power
And you know that that’s the information that they suppress and devour
Who you think the motherfuckers that crashed in the tower?
Who you think that made it turn into ash in an hour?
The same ones that invaded Jerome
The ones that never told you about the skeletons on the moon
Yeah, the ones that poison all the food you consume
The ones that never told you about Mount Vesuvius Tomb
The Bird Flu is a lie, the Swine Flu is a lie
Why would that even come as a surprise?
Yeah, the Polio vaccine made you die
It caused cancer and it cost a lot of people their lives
Do y’all know about Bohemian Grove?
How the world leader sacrificing children in robes?
Lucifer is God in the public school system
I suggest you open up your ears and you listen
