What Marvel's Movie Characters Are Like In Comics Now

This is basically one big post of comics spoilers, so you are warned.

    1. Spider-Man

      Sony
      Correct!
      Wrong!

Up until recently, Peter Parker had his body and mind taken over by Otto “Dr. Octopus” Octavius in a complicated “Freaky Friday” type scenario that left Peter to “die” in Otto’s frail and damaged body. Octavius tried to make the most of circumstances by becoming a better Spider-Man than Peter ever was. This story ran its course, and Peter Parker is back to normal as Spider-Man, though he’s now living a life that Octavius actually improved in many ways. (Like, for example, Peter is now the CEO of a company called Parker Industries.) Where to start: The Superior Spider-Man Vol. 1: My Own Worst Enemy for the beginning of the Otto Octavius storyline, and The Amazing Spider-Man Vol. 1: The Parker Luck for the return of Peter Parker.

      Marvel Comics
    1. Captain America

      Marvel
      Correct!
      Wrong!

Captain America recently had the super soldier serum drained from his body in battle with a villain known as The Iron Nail. As a result, he now has the body of an old man. Despite this, he still leads the Avengers as Steve Rogers. He recently learned that he was betrayed by Tony Stark and a secret group of Avengers known as the Illuminati, and discovered that they have been doing morally questionable things in order to keep Earth from being destroyed by a multiversal threat. He is now leading a S.H.I.E.L.D./Avengers mission to hunt down Stark and his collaborators. Where to start: Captain America Vol. 4: The Iron Nail

      Marvel Comics
    1. Thor

      Marvel
      Correct!
      Wrong!

In a confrontation with Nick Fury, Thor suddenly became “unworthy” under mysterious circumstances. As a result, he lost control of his enchanted hammer Mjolnir. He remains a member of the Avengers and now wields an enchanted ax. Though many Asgardians tried to wield Mjolnir and failed, an unknown woman now wields the hammer as the new Thor. Where to start: All New Thor #1

      Marvel Comics
    1. Iron Man

      Marvel
      Correct!
      Wrong!

It’s kinda complicated to explain how this happened, but Tony Stark’s mind has been compromised and as a result, he’s reverted to being a smug, ruthless capitalist creep. His first move as the Superior Iron Man will be to unleash Exremis 3.0 on the city of San Francisco in a bid to create a “perfect” technological utopia on earth. Stark is also the leader of a secret group of Avengers known as The Illuminati, and has been forced to do horrible things in order to prevent the destruction of the multiverse. As a result, his friendship with Steve Rogers has been destroyed. Where to start: The Superior Iron Man #1

      Marvel Comics
    1. Hulk

      Marvel
      Correct!
      Wrong!

Bruce Banner was shot in the head by an unknown assassin, but Tony Stark was able to completely reverse the damage with his Extremis technology. Banner then discovered that Stark had tampered with the gamma bomb that turned him into the Hulk. Banner seeks revenge on Stark by using a modified version of Extremis to trigger his transformation into the Hulk while retaining his intellect. The two eventually reconciled, and the Hulk/Banner hybrid has taken on a new identity as Doc Green. Doc Green has joined the secret group of Avengers known as The Illuminati, and is on the run with them as they are pursued by S.H.I.E.L.D.’s Avengers led by Steve Rogers. Where to start: Original Sin: Hulk Vs. Iron Man

      Marvel Comics
    1. Hawkeye

      Marvel
      Correct!
      Wrong!

Hawkeye is a member of the Avengers, but has his own adventures on the side in Brooklyn, often with his protégé, Kate Bishop, and his cool dog. This doesn’t sound that exciting, but the Hawkeye solo series by Matt Fraction, David Aja, and Annie Wu is pretty great and formally inventive. Where to start: Hawkeye Vol. 1: My Life As A Weapon

      Marvel Comics
    1. Black Widow

      Marvel
      Correct!
      Wrong!

Black Widow is just doing her thing with the Avengers and S.H.I.E.L.D., and also on her own. There’s nothing major to report, but she has her own series focused on her spy missions now. Where to start: Black Widow Vol. 1: The Finely Woven Thread

      Marvel
    1. Nick Fury

      Marvel
      Correct!
      Wrong!

OK, this one is super confusing. The original Nick Fury – who is a white dude – was recently revealed to be secretly preemptively murdering aliens and cosmic beings for years in defense of Earth. After a big confrontation with the Avengers, he’s basically out of the picture now. His son, Nick Fury Jr., has taken his place in S.H.I.E.L.D. This Fury is a black man and looks like a younger version of Samuel L. Jackson in the movies. Where to start: For the original Nick Fury, Original Sin, and for Nick Fury Jr., Secret Avengers Vol. 1: Let's Have A Problem

      Marvel Comics
    1. Maria Hill

      Marvel
      Correct!
      Wrong!

Maria Hill is the director of S.H.I.E.L.D., and spends a lot of her time lately coming into conflict with the X-Men. It’s been strongly suggested that she has a thing for Cyclops even though she also kinda hates him. Where to start: Uncanny X-Men Vol. 4: X-Men Vs. S.H.I.E.L.D.

      Marvel Comics
    1. Falcon

      Marvel
      Correct!
      Wrong!

Sam Wilson has stepped up and taken on the mantle of Captain America after Steve Rogers was forced into retirement. He now serves as the field leader of the Avengers. Where to start: All New Captain America #1

      Marvel
    1. The Winter Soldier

      Marvel
      Correct!
      Wrong!

Bucky Barnes has taken over the role of the “man on the wall” from the original Nick Fury, and is now preemptively assassinating alien threats before they make it to Earth. Where to start: Bucky Barnes: Winter Soldier #1

      Marvel Comics
    1. Loki

      Marvel
      Correct!
      Wrong!

Loki was reincarnated as a child for a while and attempted to redeem himself, but inevitably reverted back to adulthood and his old trickster ways. He currently works as an agent of the All-Mother of Asgard, and is kinda sorta maybe using his mastery of deception for good in Loki: Agent of Asgard. Where to start: Loki: Agent of Asgard Vol. 1: Trust Me

      Marvel Comics
    1. Guardians of the Galaxy

      Marvel
      Correct!
      Wrong!

The core group of Peter “Star-Lord” Quill, Rocket, Groot, Drax, and Gamorra have spent a lot of time teaming up with other characters from the Marvel universe – Iron Man, the time-displaced original X-Men, Captain Marvel, and the new good-guy version of Venom. Quill has developed an adorable long distance romance with Kitty Pryde from the X-Men. Where to start: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1: Cosmic Avengers

      Marvel Comics
    1. Thanos

      Marvel
      Correct!
      Wrong!

Thanos led an invasion of Earth that was ultimately stopped by the Avengers. At the end of that story, he was frozen and taken into custody by the secret group of Avengers called the Illuminati. He was later revived by Namor, who needed the help of Thanos and his evil cronies to destroy a series of alternate Earths in the hope of stopping the destruction of their own universe. Where to start: Infinity

      Marvel Comics
    1. Charles Xavier

      Fox
      Correct!
      Wrong!

At the end of a war between the Avengers and X-Men, Cyclops was possessed by the Phoenix and murdered his mentor, Charles Xavier, in a fit of rage. Xavier is gone now, but he’s still very much at the center of stories. His brain was stolen by the Red Skull, who grafted it to his own, granting the evil Nazi immense psychic powers. An evil young man from the future who looks just like Xavier and has the same powers was revealed to be his son with Mystique. When the X-Men had to come together for the reading of his will, it was revealed that Xavier was in fact married to Mystique, and that he had essentially lobotomized an immensely powerful mutant named Matthew Malloy and kept him a secret from the X-Men. Where to start: For his death, Avengers Vs. X-Men, and for "The Last Will and Testament of Charles Xavier," Uncanny X-Men Vol. 4: X-Men Vs. S.H.I.E.L.D.

      Marvel Comics
    1. Magneto

      Fox
      Correct!
      Wrong!

In the wake of the X-Men’s battle with the Avengers, Magneto’s powers have been greatly diminished. He is currently aligned with Cyclops’ revolutionary faction of the X-Men, though he secretly wishes to take revenge on him for killing his friend, Charles Xavier. Magneto currently shaves his head bald in tribute to Charles. Where to start: Magneto Vol. 1: Infamous

      Marvel Comics
    1. Wolverine

      Fox
      Correct!
      Wrong!

Wolverine went and started the Jean Grey School on the grounds of old Xavier School after deciding that Cyclops’ X-Men had essentially become militant separatists who had no interest in pursuing Charles Xavier’s dream of peaceful human and mutant coexistence. He served as the headmaster of the school with Storm – with whom he’d started a romantic relationship in the recent past – and the de facto leader of the faction of X-Men at the school. He lost his healing factor in a very complicated storyline, and died heroically at the end of the recent Death of Wolverine miniseries. We’ll almost certainly never ever see him again. Where to start: Death of Wolverine

      Marvel Comics
    1. Mystique

      Fox
      Correct!
      Wrong!

Mystique was recently revealed to be the secret wife of Charles Xavier. She was also revealed to be the mother of a child with Xavier – who looks exactly like him and has the same psychic powers – and another mutant known as Raze, who was somehow fathered by Wolverine and has both of his parents powers. Raze and the young Xavier lead a version of the Brotherhood who have come to the present twice to attack the X-Men. Mystique leads the present-day Brotherhood, and set in motion a chain of events that led her to take over the island of Madripoor, where she intends to build her own mutant society. Where to start: All New X-Men Vol. 2: Here to Stay

      Marvel Comics
    1. Cyclops

      Fox
      Correct!
      Wrong!

Scott Summers killed his mentor and father figure Charles Xavier while possessed by the Phoenix force. In the aftermath of that, Cyclops – who was already becoming something of a militant mutant rights activist – started a new faction of X-Men with Magneto and Emma Frost devoted to recruiting young mutants to fight for a “mutant revolution.” As a result of all this, he is a pariah who has been rejected by many of the X-Men, and is considered a criminal at large by S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Avengers. Also, his powers were “broken” after being possessed by the Phoenix, so he’s slowly learning how to control them again. Where to start: Avengers Vs. X-Men for the Phoenix stuff, and All New X-Men: Yesterday's X-Men for the start of his mutant revolution.

      Marvel Comics
    1. Beast

      Fox
      Correct!
      Wrong!

In the wake of Charles Xavier’s death, Henry McCoy is furious with Xavier’s killer, his once close friend Cyclops. A distraught McCoy decides to bring the original five X-Men – including teen versions of himself and Cyclops – to the present in an attempt to freak Cyclops out. This backfires horribly when the original X-Men end up stuck in the present, setting in motion a series of catastrophic problems and irreversibly messing up the space/time continuum. The main theme with Beast these days is that while he presents himself as a moral authority, he is constantly making morally questionable and scientifically irresponsible decisions. He’s also a member of the secret group of Avengers known as the Illuminati, who have done some terrible things in order to prevent the destruction of Earth. Where to start: All New X-Men Vol. 1: Yesterday's X-Men

      Marvel Comics
    1. Storm

      Fox
      Correct!
      Wrong!

Storm’s marriage to the Black Panther was annulled following a war between the Avengers and the X-Men, and she stepped down as the Queen of Wakanda. She returned to the X-Men and immediately returned to her old punk mohawk look and started a romantic relationship with Wolverine. Following Wolverine’s death, she is now the headmistress of the Jean Grey School and the leader of the faction of X-Men based at the school. Where to start: Storm Vol. 1: Make It Rain

      Marvel Comics
    1. Kitty Pryde

      Fox
      Correct!
      Wrong!

Kitty Pryde served as the headmistress of the Jean Grey School until Beast brought the five original X-Men to the present, and she dedicated herself to being their mentor as long as they are trapped in this era. Kitty turned against her friends at the Jean Grey School and decided the original X-Men would be safer with Cyclops’ camp, even though she hates him for killing Charles Xavier while possessed by the Phoenix and does not agree with his politics. After an adventure in space, she’s involved in a long distance relationship with Peter “Star-Lord” Quill of the Guardians of the Galaxy. Where to start: All New X-Men Vol. 1: Yesterday's X-Men

      Marvel Comics
    1. Jean Grey

      Fox
      Correct!
      Wrong!

This one is kinda confusing. The original Jean Grey died in a story back in 2003, and has remained dead. The teenage version of Jean was brought to the present by Beast, and is now stuck in this era. She’s had a very hard time after learning of her horrible fate, and has been forced to confront many people who want to punish her for things her adult self did while possessed by the Phoenix. She is the de facto leader of the time displaced original X-Men after the young Cyclops went off into space with his space pirate father, who he had never met as a child. (It’s complicated.) Where to start: All New X-Men Vol. 1: Yesterday's X-Men

      Marvel Comics
    1. Iceman

      Fox
      Correct!
      Wrong!

Iceman is one of the main faculty members of the Jean Grey School. He’s had a hard time lately – he is distraught after the passing of his mentor Charles Xavier, and furious with his former friend Cyclops, who is responsible for Xavier’s death. He was also dumped by Kitty Pryde, and has had to meet his teenage self, who is stranded in the present day. Where to start: All New X-Men Vol. 1: Yesterday's X-Men

      Marvel Comics
    1. Nightcrawler

      Fox
      Correct!
      Wrong!

Nightcrawler died sacrificing himself in battle, but he’s since come back to life because it’s comics and of course he did. He’s back with the Jean Grey School X-Men, and is just trying to make the most of having a second chance at life. Where to start: Nightcrawler Vol. 1: Homecoming

      Marvel Comics
    1. Colossus

      Fox
      Correct!
      Wrong!

Colossus was a mess for a while after being possessed – simultaneously!!! – by the Juggernaut’s demonic master Cyttorak and the Phoenix force. He was a bit of a pariah for a while and spent some time with Cable's X-Force, but has since returned to the X-Men after his close friend Nightcrawler came back to life. Where to start: Avengers Vs. X-Men

    1. Emma Frost

      Fox
      Correct!
      Wrong!

Emma Frost ended her long term relationship with Cyclops after he betrayed her to become Dark Phoenix and killed Charles Xavier. Nevertheless, she continues to work with him in creating a new school for mutants and pursuing a “mutant revolution.” Her psychic powers were “broken” after she was possessed by the Phoenix along with Cyclops and three other X-Men, and she’s slowly relearning how to use them. Where to start: All New X-Men Vol. 1: Yesterday's X-Men

      Marvel Comics
    1. Rogue

      Fox
      Correct!
      Wrong!

Rogue joined the Avengers after Charles Xavier’s death as part of a “unity squad” devoted to pursuing Xavier’s dream of peaceful human and mutant cohabitation. It’s kinda complicated, but in a recent story she was forced to absorb the mind and powers of the Avenger known as Wonder Man. As a result, Rogue is right back to where she started as an X-Man in the ‘80s – with no control over her powers, and with an Avenger trapped in her head. Where to start: Uncanny Avengers Vol. 1: The Red Shadow

      Marvel Comics
    1. Daredevil

      Marvel
      Correct!
      Wrong!

Daredevil’s secret identity as Manhattan lawyer Matt Murdock was revealed in the press years ago, but Murdock denied it publicly for years. Rather than perjure himself, he ultimately admitted the truth in a courtroom. He was immediately disbarred, but moved to San Francisco where he still could practice as a lawyer. He now serves as that city’s primary vigilante, but will soon come into conflict with Tony Stark, who will soon bring Extremis 3.0 to the Bay Area. Where to start: Daredevil Vol. 1: Devil At Bay

      Marvel Comics
    1. Black Panther

      Marvel
      Correct!
      Wrong!

Black Panther is having a rough time lately. He gave up the throne of Wakanda to his sister Shuri, had his marriage with Storm annulled, and his nation was mostly destroyed by a Phoenix-possessed Namor. To make matters worse, he was forced to team up with Namor as part of the secret group of Avengers called the Illuminati and has had to decide the fate of entire worlds. Where to start: New Avengers Vol. 1: Everything Dies

      Marvel Comics
    1. Doctor Strange

      Marvel
      Correct!
      Wrong!

Stephen Strange is a member of the secret group of Avengers called the Illuminati, and has gone the extra mile in pursuing that group’s quest to stop the destruction of their world by any means necessary: He sold his soul in order to gain extra mystical powers. Where to start: New Avengers Vol. 1: Everything Dies

      Marvel Comics
    1. Captain Marvel

      Marvel
      Correct!
      Wrong!

Carol Danvers recently took the name Captain Marvel after years of going by the codename Ms. Marvel. She now splits her time between being a member of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s Avengers and adventures in space both on her own and with the Guardians of the Galaxy. Where to start: Captain Marvel Vol. 1: Higher, Further, Faster, More

      Marvel Comics
    1. Inhumans

      Marvel
      Correct!
      Wrong!

This one is a real headache. The original royal civilization of the Inhumans, led by their king Black Bolt and their queen Medusa, was destroyed after Thanos attacked their floating city of Attilan in a quest to murder his long-lost Inhuman son. In this battle, Black Bolt detonated a bomb full of Terrigen Mist – the substance that transforms Inhumans and gives them special powers – in Manhattan. The mist made its way around the world, transforming hundreds of people who never knew they had Inhuman DNA into full-on Inhumans. There’s a new series that mainly follows the adventures of Medusa and the brand new Inhumans, and it lays the groundwork for the Inhumans eventually becoming the Marvel Cinematic Universe's answer to the X-Men. Where to start: Inhuman Vol. 1: Genesis

      Marvel Comics
    1. Fantastic Four

      Fox
      Correct!
      Wrong!

Reed Richards is one of the core members of the secret group of Avengers called the Illuminati, and has been working to prevent the world from being destroyed along with the rest of the multiverse. When the main Avengers find out about their secret plans, Richards goes on the run with the rest of that cabal. His wife, the Invisible Woman, joins up with S.H.I.E.L.D. to hunt them down, but is actually a spy working with her husband. Human Torch and The Thing are just kinda doing their usual stuff in the meantime. Marvel is actually canceling Fantastic Four soon, so it looks like the team is going to go on hiatus for a while. Where to start: New Avengers Vol. 1: Everything Dies for Reed Richards, and Fantastic Four Vol. 1: The Fall of the Fantastic Four for the whole team.

      Marvel Comics
