The Civil Wars Maybe Broke Up

The country-folk duo have canceled a run of tour dates due to “internal discord and irreconcilable differences of ambition.” Yikes. posted on

The Civil Wars announced that they’ve canceled a run of tour dates on their Facebook page today, claiming that the duo of Joy Williams and John Paul White cannot “continue as a touring entity” due to “internal discord and irreconcilable differences of ambition.” Despite all this, they say they plan to record new music together next year. Good luck with that!

Williams and White are being really cool with their fans about the canceled dates, promising to reimburse people who paid money in advance to travel to their gigs. This is incredibly classy of them.

This split – which could very well be permanent given the way they described their conflict – comes as something of a shock, since the duo seemed primed to be right on the edge of becoming huge mainstream stars. Their only full-length studio album, Barton Hallow, won for Best Folk Album and Best Country Duo/Group Performance at the Grammys earlier this year, and they teamed up with Taylor Swift for her Hunger Games soundtrack hit “Safe & Sound.” They also recorded an episode of MTV Unplugged that aired in the spring.
