There was a significant amount of armed rebellion, civil disobedience and diplomatic negotiation before India won independence. Furthermore, the ensuing partition of India was one of the bloodiest conflicts in this planet’s history. Gandhi was a proponent of non-violence, yes, but there were also times when he did support violent action (he was by no means a consistent individual). Further, Indian independence, taken as a whole, was most definitely not a non-violent process.

He talks pretty fast, but this is some great information.

i laugh how people from overseas think british people still think this is all important (the monarchy etc)… we really don’t. it’s just there. we don’t get much say in it.

Actually, the Commonwealth Realms aren’t ruled by the British Monarch. They’re ruled by their own monarch (ex: the Queen of Canada), who legally is NOT the British Monarch but just happens to actually be the same lovely English grandmother as the Brits’ Queen. This means that yes, the Queen CAN go to war with herself. It happened in 1947 to her father, George VI (yes, the King’s Speech one for those who know more pop culture than history) when India and Pakistan went to war before either was a fully independent nation. Both still had Governor-Generals representing the Crown. Full independence came shortly after that war. Also, while very little real power belongs to the Crown, its status as a legal fiction is insanely important to the basic functions of government and law in the Realms.

Just one more thing to point out: commonwealth realms ARE countries whose head of state is the British Monarch. There are 16 of them, not just one giant one.

Why was an image of Gandhi shown when talking about violent break away? Unless he was talking about the U.K….

This isn’t even true. The Republic of Ireland isn’t the official name of that country. It’s Ireland or Eire. There are actually specific rules in the European Parliament forbidding members from referring to Ireland as the Republic of Ireland/Irish Republic. MORE RESEARCH PLEEZE.

They should make one explaining the American Federal system, which most American’s don’t even really understand.

If the purpose of this video was to make me understand things, a bit slower narration would have been appropriate. I got the geographical portion (I was familiar with most of it), but the rest of the videos was more irritating than educational.

Hahaha this is so accurate :) hurray I may show this to every American that can’t quite grasp the concept of Wales from now on!
