An American Carol

Hollywood’s conservatives have come together to make a comedy/parody about Michael Moore and the liberal elite. In theaters October 3rd. If this is anything like the Fox News’ Half-Hour News Hour, it’s sure to be filled with lots of kneeslappers and wisecracks.

  • Just awful. A line was drawn between “liberals” (dumb and idealistic) and “conservatives” (patriotic and noble). The truth is, in real life, these two stereotypes are stupid and meaningless, but they were even more stupid and meaningless in this movie. The faux-patriotism was heavy handed and about as subtle as a brick thrown at your forehead. I know better than to expect clever wit from a Leslie Nielsen movie, but I didn't think it could be this bad. I'm not a fan of slapstick, but those were the best parts. Even if you check your brain at the door, this movie will insult your intelligence. When it was over, the few people in the theater seemed stupefied, as if they couldn't believe the movie was so bad and they sat through it all. I felt shame. I wished they had left the lights off, so I could sneak out in the darkness. I hated the idea that someone I knew would see me and realize I didn't get up and walk out on American Carol. Things have been weird in the US lately and quickly getting weirder. This didn't help my mood. For anyone interested in politics, it's not about left/right, liberal/conservative, or Democrat/Republican. Both parties are for bigger government and less liberty. The two party nonsense just divides us into increasingly meaningless groups. The real political struggle in the US is Big Government statism (what both parties want) versus individual liberties (what our country's founders wanted). There was nothing of that in American Carol. It was all the “do what your Republican president says” false patriotism of Fox News. Shallow. Pathetic. Propaganda.
