1. Appearing as if you have no actual knowledge of the topic of your list
Your Buzzfeed viewers will not take kindly to a list that you have produced if it appears you thought of an idea that would be popular; so you took advantage of the good ol’ website Google and found vague information without much depth or proof of knowledge. Whether it be about a city, something related to the music scene, or even your favorite television show, make sure that you know, or at least are more than an amateur at pretending to know, what you’re talking about.
2. Showing no signs of originality
You will not impress your Buzzfeed viewers by making a list that can be found in the first ten links when one Google searches that topic. Be original! You have unlimited resources at your disposal. Take what idea you may have, whether original or not, and brainstorm ideas and ways to make that particular idea unique from all the others. If not, you will have some pretty bored readers on your hand.
3. Overlooking particular sentences or ideas that could leave readers easily offended
No matter what you do, SOMETHING you publish on Buzzfeed will annoy or rile SOMEONE up. But it’s your job to overview and correct anything you might think could offend someone from a race, gender, or sexuality point of view. While not being too overly-sensitive to topics, it is not a bad idea to keep your list as neutral as possible for all parties; so as not to incite an online riot.
4. Making the list too tedious and dull
If your Buzzfeed readers don’t even make it through scrolling halfway down your list, then you are obviously not doing something right. Don’t make the list so long and full of details that someone who was only mildly interested in your list to begin with exits out of the list and moves on with their day. Not everyone will be interested in what you have to say; so make an effort to entice them by being concise and to the point. If you do have a long list, don’t weigh it down with too many words. Rather, find appealing images from the world wide web that can go along with quick, on point sentences.
5. By forgetting key elements of your topic
Without a doubt, your list will be read by more than a few Buzzfeed readers who consider themselves to be an experts in the field of whatever you chose to make your list about. So with this in mind, I urge you to please consider spending a GREAT deal of time researching what you happen to be talking about. Clearly, you will not be able to hit on every single aspect of a certain topic, but it would be best to hit the big points and a few lesser-know or lesser-expected points to supplement it.
