The BBC's Website For The 1997 General Election Is Still Online And It's Wonderful

The BBC was using GIFs way before they were cool.

If you went to the BBC News website to find out about the general election you'd expect to see something like this.

But it wasn't always like that: Back in 1997 the BBC made a mini-website for the general election that is still online to see in all its web 1.0 glory.

    LOOK AT THESE GIFS.

Look at the big "e", which presumably stands for "election", and the picture of Princess Diana, which is on this page for some reason.

There's a whole section on the Tory leadership battle that happened after the election (William Hague won), featuring this A+++ graphic.

These were the big issues in 1997.

This bit on whether the UK should join the euro turned out to be slightly off the mark in hindsight.

These were the days long before the rise of UKIP, before the Green party was considered mainstream, and before the Tories jazzed up their logo.

Among the experts on hand was future Newsnight presenter Evan Davis, then just a lowly economics correspondent, with a slightly fuller head of hair.

The site has an email address too, but BuzzFeed News can confirm that no one is answering it.

It was a big enough project to have this list of credits, which looks at lot like the credits for a 1990s TV sitcom.

You were ahead of your time, BBC 1997 general election web team.

A shout-out also to the BBC's site for the 1997 Budget, which included this important GIF.
