Note: I am not complaining. Just imagine your self in my [our] situation trying to have a normal life like every else around you. Read without the “then go back home, you 12 year old criminal!” mindset. I moved to the US when I was 12 and landed in NY. Obviously did not need an ID until I went to college, which by the way, I could only apply to NY community or city colleges (Other states, like Florida, do not allow this) and no, couldn’t get financial aid! But God forbid I forgot my student ID! Security wouldn’t let me in the buildings, even though they saw me every day for 4.5 years. I tried to have a normal 21 years old life, but try doing it while your dad has to take you to your dentist’s appointment? No different than a 15 year old being dropped off at the movie theater.
Or when 7-11 and other stores rarely accepted my valid, not-expired, passport when they carded me and people in the store look at me weird.
In addition to opening bank accounts, ID’s are needed to even return a pair of Jeans!
Florida’s TSA always gave me a hard time flying back to NY and questioned me and everyone look at you weird. At 23 got a dream job opportunity doing what I studied, but i couldn’t get paid. Fourteen years later, thanks to Obama’s Referred Action, I am now able to freely do all those things. There is no path to citizenship. I have to re apply and pay my fees every 2 years. But I can not describe how fast my life changed and the security I feel by just having an ID.
