‘Couples Retreat’ Is No. 1
Hollywood expected “Couples Retreat,” a dismally reviewed comedy about romantic therapy on a tropical island, to be another dud in a parade of them from Universal and Relativity Media. Instead, this $60 million movie opened smashingly, selling about $35.3 million in tickets at North American theaters, according to the box office tracking service Hollywood.com. The explanation was probably a lack of competition — “Couples Retreat” was the lone new offering from studios.
