Clever alterations, I'm okay with. Painting over neatly in a solid color so as to “restore” or whatever, that's fine. Yeah, part of the magic is the temporary quality that street art always has. At least there are photographs of all the originals, so they're not really gone for good. So I don't really care much. But the stupid stencils and squiggles are just dumb. It's immature. Like keying someone's car. Even if it's parked crooked or it's kind of old in the first place, that's still a shitty thing to do.

oddly enough, some graffitiists (bet that ain't even IN the dictionary) do special return bombs, as it were, but for the most part, the very knowledge that one leads to the other is an interesting bit of “bait”…
NYC has some fairly 'hard' laws about that hobby. Perhaps it's an elaborate trap for setting an example to an excellent graffitiist? (I'm sticking with that word, red wavy lines can just get over it)
I love banksy's work, the simplicity, the content
it's an original (though now well copied) technique, just as the stickers. (butt ugly or not) In the long run, he's seen his work destryoed by governments…I don't doubt for one moment he laughs…at least, now.
Perhaps after some travel time through the country,
he might return….

We don't hear Banksy complaining about this. He works in graffiti, he knows the territory. The only people complaining are Banksy fans and building owners who thought they had a few million dollars added to their property values.

If you're going to ruin someone else's graffiti, at least make it better.

Graffiti is a transitory medium. Yet, who among you will defend tagging on The Last Supper. Banksy's work may not be on that par but he is the artist of this era. He is considered a national treasure in the UK.

So as much as I love good street art, who are we to call Banksy untouchable? If he wanted his art to stay pristine, and provoke only those who have the means, he would have painted this on canvas and put it in a gallery.
This is what happens to street art, and thats part of the appeal.
Granted, I would hope you would raise the bar when painting up Bansky, not support the “graffitti” nay-sayers. But hey, we can't have it all.

I fully support the act of painting over Banksy. His pieces can live momentarily and there is beauty in that. I don't support that these guys are getting exposure for piggy backing on Banksy to promote Posterboys book.
