15 Things Aboriginal People Living In Canada Want You To Know

We asked a few of the 1.4 million aboriginal people in Canada what it's like to live north of the 49th.

    1. It's not "Indian" or "Native American," it's Aboriginal or Indigenous.

    2. And while we're at it, there are actually three different titles: First Nations, Métis, and Inuit.

    3. If you're Métis, you actually get asked if you're related to Louis Riel.

    4. If you're Inuit, people assume you live in an igloo.

    5. If you're First Nations, people assume you don't pay taxes.

    6. And live in free housing.

    7. And can take them fishing or hunting whenever and wherever they want without a licence.

    8. And get money when you turn 18.

    9. You get really sick of people complaining about immigration.

    10. You wish people would stop calling you Canadian.

    11. People mistake you for Spanish or Asian or some kind of mix of everything.

    12. Your ancestors played hockey before it was cool.

    13. And lacrosse.

    14. Maple syrup is Canadian? Please.

    15. But mostly...and most aggravatingly: You have to deal with this every Halloween.
