This Ad Supporting Athletes’ LGBT Rights In The Netherlands Is Strange

Yes, that is a soccer player wearing a giant closet costume.

1. The Royal Dutch Football Association recently released this video to help promote acceptance of LGBT athletes in the Netherlands. It’s a little quirky.

The KNVB’s effort to promote LGBT acceptance within a rather progressive country that has legally allowed same-sex marriage since 2001 is admirable, but they might have whiffed on the execution. Are we supposed to laugh at a closeted gay athlete showering with his teammates and awkwardly fitting in with the team, when these are very real issues that can keep gay athletes from coming out? What do you think?

“Are we supposed to laugh at a closeted gay athlete showering with his teammates and awkwardly fitting in with the team, when these are very real issues that can keep gay athletes from coming out?” Where did you get that from? It’s clearly showing how you’re life is affected negatively by staying in the closet, in this case in terms of sport. It lets you know it’s ok to come out as gay because your teammates will accept you either way.

That’s the entire point! Being in the closet is what makes it “awkward,” not being openly gay. That’s why “there’s nothing queer” about being openly gay. The idea is to normalize openly gay teammates.
